Francisco
Tarrega has been quoted as being the "awakener of the modern
(classical) guitar".
In
the 19th century, the guitar had fallen out of favour as a serious
concert instrument despite the efforts of virtuoso guitarist /
composers like Sor in the previous 100 years. It was regarded
only as an instrument for accompanying singing.
Tarrega
again popularised the instrument through concerts and composition
and developed much of the modern technique used today, with the
exception of playing without nails.
A
number of his pieces are well known even today ("Recuerdos
de la Alhambra") and are often heard transcribed to other
instruments.
